14-19-2 Carburetor

My 14-19-2 is supposed to be equiped with a Marvel Schebler MA-4-5 Carburetor model 10-4893-1 (according to internet sources for a O-470-K this would be the standard carb) On my plane there is a Marvel... MA-4-5 Carburetor but it is (according to the data plate) a 10-3965-12! I suspect MA-4-5 refers to the cast parts-the throttle body and float bowl, and the other numbers 10-..... refers perhaps to the jets and external hardware. Questions 1) is my guess about the significance of the numbers correct? 2) Although the 10-4893 is the usual for a 470 engine, did Bellanca perhaps use another carb? Do I perhaps have the right carb anyhow? 3) My carb has been rebuilt in its lifetime-is it possible that they took a MA-4-5 carb and by changing the jets and external hardware effectively turned the carb into the correct "4893" despite a data plate that calls it a "3695"? I suppose all this is academic because the engine idles perfectly and delivers fuel just fine at full throttle (no dead spots in between) . My main problem was a crack at the flange of the float bowl. I ordered a new one from a salvage yard and hopefully with a little mongrelization, I should be able to fix it. Just curious as to whether I am taking my life in my hands due to the carb change.

The engine may run fine with this carb but it may not be legal, this probably won't cause any problems unless you have a very picky IA or you have an accident and the FAA or your insurance finds out about it...Greg

TCM # 535207 or 538872 is an A eng, #536911 is an E eng,#535207 or #538872 is a J eng, #539883 is a K or L eng #641139 is a S or R eng and #535503 is a B, M, or N engine all these OPEC carbs work fine on an O-470 delivering 230 hp at 14 gals an hour! Lynn the crate

OK. I consulted my Van Dusen and SSR catalogs of some time ago. I found that 10-4893-1, 10-3965-12 and 10-4191 carbs were applicable to the O-470K.. As most of you know, most O-470 applications were in Cessnas. The carb on my -2 project says 10-3965-12. But who knows.......This engine came out of a 1956 Cessna 180. I do know that the 10- number on a 150 Franklin in a Stinson is a different 10- number on a 150 Franklin in a Bellanca. I'd think if I was curious and technical, I'd call TCM. Somebody else do the homework; but, I'd like to know the results. Dan

I checked with a recent catalog and I am thankful for your having checked the other catalogs and finding that my 10 number was reasonable for my engine. It's reassuring to know that my carb isn't completely wrong (in my catalog, I couldn't find any engine for which my carb was recommended)
