My airplane (above) is currently based near Edwards AFB in California with my best friend, F-16 Test Pilot, working at Edwards.

Last weekend he expierenced some scary engine hestiation so bad that he started to look for a field to land in, we've checked the following:
-throttle + mixture linkages are fine and seem proper
-primer was "in and locked" during the event

If any one has seen this before and any Bellanca/ACA airplanes your comments would be greatly appreciated. Needless to say, on such a new aircraft, it has us concerned..........

Desmond's comments on the incident follow:

Here's the story- it seemed to have nothing to do with aeros, as far as I could tell.

After recovering from an aileron roll I advanced the throttle to climb for the next set of aeros. As I did so, the RPM dropped to ~idle (900) with the throttle at full open. After setting up a glide to a dirt strip in the middle of nowhere, I verified fuel/mags and set mixture to full rich. Carb heat hot did nothing. I then altered the position of the mixture from rich to slightly lean to full rich and I did see some increase in RPM (2000 was the best I got).

Later on the ground during a run up to 1800 RPM the engine performed as expected. However, when I subsequently advanced the throttle to taxi up a slight incline, the RPM dropped back to idle as I advanced the throttle.

That's about it, bro.

Bottom line: the problem seemed to occur when I advanced the throttle.

I am certainly no expert, but it sounds to me like an induction leak causing a very lean mixture. Runs good at idle and will not take an increase in throttle setting.

had this happen to me in a 7gcaa. started during acro as well. i did slowly advance the throttle, and was able to get about 2k on the tac. after landing, it would take very slow advances in throttle, but would not allow a run at it as if to take off. took 2 of us several hours, but we tracked it the in line fuel filter. replaced the filter element and all was well. have no idea where the crud came from.

Hi My Name is Al, I to have had the same type of problem and it was traces to a stuck float in the carb( Partial). check its condition and check type and travel. Also Check vent however tank and caps are vented so it is unlikely. Keep the Blue side down as much as possible Al

One more check:

Muffler(s). If internal baffles have broken, they can float to the rear and choke exhaust, giving you the old "banana in the tailpipe" effect. Certain maneuvers and airplane attitudes can shift them around so the engine runs normally at times. Worth checking.

Regards,

WE REMOVED THE CARB, SENT IN TO AN OVERHAUL SHOP AND THEY FOUND EVIDENCE THAT (FUEL STAINING ETC) THE FLOAT WAS STICKING.

WE ARE PUTTING A FULL CARB KIT AND HOPING THAT SOLVES THE PROBLEM.

JUST GOES TO SHOW IT CAN HAPPEN ON BRAND NEW EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS OLDER.

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES !!!!!
