8KCAB Landing Gear

I am currently restoring a 1980 8KCAB and need to find someone that can rebend the original spring steel gear. I tried to contact one Jim Hayton listed on a July 31, 2005- August 9, 2005 posting, but was unable. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Those legs have a very specific heat treat and there is no approved repair procedure. Basically, rebending them is not actually legal unless you want to go experimental. If someone does have the spec for it, then they need approval to use it (PMA type thing). To my knowledge, no one does.

Well I guess that answers that. Does anybody have another set of steel gear legs they are willing to part with? Does ACA still supply the steel legs?

Thanks,
Alan Shackleton

They just put a set of steel landing gear on my airplane. It also increases the normal category gross weight to 1950.

Rainbow Aviation can Fix your problem! He is Doing mine on My rebuild now and has an approved repair process. Talk to Rainbow Ron, He has nice Spars as well Al

I found another person with an approved process and he has my landing gear right now. They will be returned to me with the 337's signed and FSDO approved.

Thanks for the help, it's always nice to have multiple sources for this stuff.

Alan

Hope they annealed them first. To do it right, you need to start over.

Many years ago, there was a gear leg that broke on the ramp during a run up. We got sued, and it cost more than is should have to have it thrown out of court. (Since we never made or rebent the leg). Moral of the story: know what you are getting.

I spoke with the fellow at length about his experience and process and feel very confident in him. He has been performing this service for Cessna and Bellanca owners and repair shops for years. It includes annealing, bending, peening, heat treating, magnaflux, etc. and comes back with certs and a 337.

I would suppose the seventeen year statute of repose brought about by the General Aviation Revitalization Act would pretty well cover ACA's liability in this. Now, MY liability regarding this airplane is another story.

I would love to put the new gear on it, but I am already over budget and too far along to cut and weld tubing.

Thanks,
Alan

I know you are well into the process. For others considering landing gear, ACA was very generous in their turn in credit when I got new landing gear. Granted, that varies with condition of the gear. Any extra cost I paid was well worth getting the GW increase.
The airplane was turned around in one day as well.
And no, Jerry does not pay me a fee each time I write positive things.

Hello all,

This is my first post on this site.
I have a question re: the 1950 gross weight rule. As I understand it on the factory site. http://www.amerchampionaircraft.com if your super D has a certain engine, you can put landing gear "X" on it, as apposed to landing gear "Y" and it will up the gross normal catagory weight to 1950lbs. Which by my calculations, is the ONLY way you can carry a passanger with full fuel...

How does this apply to older (Bellanca) Super Ds? They allready have steel gear legs, right?? Someone please enlighten me on this subject, as a Super D or Citabria will likely be my first airplane, I want to make sure I can carry two people and full fuel in normal catagory opps, of course if I wanted to carry two and do acro, less fuel would be required to make the 1800lbs aerobatic gross weight.

Just thinking.......

As in previous post before me,go to, http://www.americanchampionaircraft.com. In their technical section, click on #422, there is a retrofit for aluminun gear legs. The cost may put you out your budget but the piece of mind that nothing will break may be worth it. Check it out.
