I am thinking of putting one of these in my 73' to get ahead of the game... I live about 5 miles outside the DC SFAR so I think it'll be a nice addition to foreflight without having the puck on me all the time....

Thoughts???

To me it seems to be a reasonable option to comply with the law. The price is definitely a selling tool as well as the ability to use existing transponder antenna wiring. Installation cost should also be reasonable.

I am in a flying club with 2 Cessnas with steam gauge avionics. We run on a shoestring budget and these seem to fit the bill. We also have old finicky transponders. This would solve that issue also. However, something else may come along before the deadline.

For my Citabria, I don't fly it in areas requiring ADS-B out, and would only rarely do so in the future. I will probably not comply by 1/1/20, but will continue to see what becomes available. I plan to comply ultimately.

I was also planning to install the Appareo ESG, because I "live" under the DFW Class Bravo. However, I'm a bit concerned about the inability to enable "anonymous" mode with the 1090-ES solutions, as you can with the 978 UAT solutions. Not sure I will ever "need" to use anonymous mode (legal for VFR only), but it could come in handy in the event the FAA ever goes to a "pay to play" pricing model, as a couple of congressmen keep pushing. Ultimately, price and convenience will probably win out, and I'll wind up with the ESG after all...
