Battery Charger Fires

For the second time this summer, I have heard on local news that a battery charger caused a fire that
burned down the garage, home and neighbor's house.
A longtime friend, A&P/IA, had a battery charger start to overheat and smoke in his shop a few years back.
I think it would be a good idea to charge your battery, removed from the airplane, outside or at least
monitored continuously if installed.
Anyone else had this happen?

Can't say that I have, Dan. I've been using a Deltran battery tender for years. Never heard of a problem with leaving those unattended.
Any time I use a heavy duty charger, I always remove the battery from the plane. And, I never let it go overnight. That is, I keep a eye on it, while it's charging. Tom Robinson

I have been using a BatteryMINDer Model 12248-AA-S5 - 12V, 8A as recommended by Concord for their sealed batteries. I do leave it on the plane at all times (as they recommend), and so far, the hangar and plane are still there. Guess that is what insurance is for, though I sure don't want to find out!

I started this topic with the traditional battery charger in mind. This is the 110v, 2-10-40 amp automobile
type charger you find at every auto parts store. I have several of the little "battery tenders" that don't really charge a battery...just maintain it. I haven't heard of any problems with them.
