citabria fuel tank size

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a citabria 1972 7GCAA, CN 232-72, in PE, South Africa. I need to fly the plane to my home base in Pretoria which is about 6 hours flying @ 110kts. The original logbooks says that the aircraft has 36 gallon fuel in total. The guy I bought it from recons that the tanks are 26 gallons in total. There are no trace in the logbooks that the tanks changed size over the years. Anybody know how to check the size of the tanks except for draining the fuel? I tried AOA but they cant check old records like this. - beyers.

I would be highly suprised if they put 26 gallon tanks in a 1972 7GCAA. The 36 gallon system did not come out until 1974 however. If I was to guess without looking at the airplane...I would guess a 39 gallon system.

But, I could be wrong.

I guess you could count the rib bays. Staart witht he butt rib. If there are 2 ribs until you hit the fuel cap, I think you have the bigger one (the thrid rib outboard). You could also check the outboard check valve (there should be an inspection cover at the compression tube right there).

[I... the 36 gallon system did not come out until 1974 however]

Jerry:

My early 1973 (278-73) had the 36 gal. system.

With the clam shell design?

Checking the print:

7-1449 was drawn in January of 1971. There ya go...I WAS wrong.

Thanx Jerry, I was wrong - the original manual says 39 gallons and not 36- Should be correct... Will check with fuel when I pick up the aerie

36 US gallons is 30 Imperial

I would like to say I remeber this from an old 6 gallon spare gas tank for the lawn mower....but truth is, I googled it.
