Concord battery

I'm installing a Concord RG-25 XC battery in a 1975 8KCAB Decathlon.
Does anyone know if these are in the newer Decathlons from the factory?
If so I should only need to update the W&B for the additional 1.5 lbs. correct? And I woldn't need an STC and 337, am I correct?
Thanks, Bill Becker

Per the Concorde web site is approved just install and thats thats

Mn flyer,
I looked on the Concord site, and I saw it said it was approved for "8KCAB Scout", but I did not see 8KCAB Decathlon. This is why I was not sure.
Thanks, Bill Becker

My '97 Super Decathlon came with the RG-25 XC battery as standard equipment. I've since switched to the Odyssey battery to save some weight.

Also, just being picky, but the Scout is an 8GCBC and the Decathlon is an 8KCAB.

Thanks, I think as long as it's on the new airplanes I will not need an STC.
By the way how do you like the Odyssey? I am helping a friend finnish puting a Christen Eagle together and thought he should try that as his battery. Also how did you handle the paperwork for the Odyssey on yours, field approval?
Thanks Bill becker

I like the Odyssey battery. It moved the CG a bit more foward for single pilot operations, but I switched from the Hartzel to an MT soon after and so that was resolved. No problems with starting the engine even in the winter (Kansas City). It seems to hold its charge better than the Concord, but I don't have anything specific to support that claim, just an observation. I've had it in about 2.5 years now and its stil working great.

To put it in I called parts (Chad) at ACA and got the associated drawing from the factory and an install kit. The install kit was simply a couple wood blocks to act as spacers since its much smaller than the Concord, and two new wires for the first runs out of the battrey box since the terminals are a different size. I did the install myself in about 30 min and then an A&P friend signed off the work and new W&B after inspecting the work. There is an old thread in here somewhere where Jerry Jr. details the approval needed, but bascially since its approved as part of the TC? all that was required was a logbook endorsement by an A&P referenceing the drawing.

FYI-

The Concorde site shows the RG25 as approved for the entire ACA line, both 7 and 8 series aircraft, are you certain your 8KCAB was delivered with an RG25XC?

The XC is slightly larger and will not fit in the battery box used in my 2002 7GCAA, nor is it approved according to both the TCDS and the Concorde table.

Tom-

I just replaced my 25 with a 25XC, I have a 7ECA. I now have an amp meter that's not steady. The needle twitches back and forth rapidly. When I put the old 25 back in the needle is smooth and steady. I only replaced the battery because with the Lamar started you need a good battery to engauge the drive gear. I assumed the XC was a better replacement, any feedback on this???

Jeff

Hi Jeff is the 25XC fully charged? Try charging it fully and then installing it, a gel type battery can and will draw very high amps if they are down, and what maybe happening is your voltage regulator is handling the load thus the needle jumping back and forth. Is your plane equipped with a generator or an alternator?

I called Concord Battery and they said because the XC has 13 plates vs the 9 plate RG25 I would need to replace the voltage reg. with one from Zeftronics. They have the technology to fix the problem.

Jeff

Hi Jeff, I installed a Zeftronics generator controller about a month ago and really like it, virtually all the noise was eliminated on the radio, voltage holds rock solid at 13.9 and the ammeter is steady as a rock.
I have the Gill gel battery in my Champ and really like it, the old voltage reg handled it ok but it was a new regulator at the time I installed the battery but the ammeter needle did bounce around some.
Aircraft Spruce has the Zeftronic controllers.
