I'm pretty sure Dave Sayles passed away because I recall reading a memorial to him a while ago, but I can't find that page any more.
Dave used to fly airshows in his Super Decathlon and his specialty was inverted ribbon cuts. He really relished doing those; you could see it in his face and hear it in his voice when he talked about them.
I flew quite a few hours with him in the Decathlon, and he was a wonderful instructor. I'd always loved the idea of aerobatics, but Dave taught me how to do it We did everything from basic slow rolls and loops to hammerheads, Immelmans, snap rolls, and Cuban eights. We even did rolling 360's a few times. Very hard, but what a trip!
My flights with Dave in that plane over southern Connecticut remain among the best memories of my life.
