Decathlon Ground Handling

The POM for my '75 Decathlon states:
“The Decathlon is easily handled on the ground by using by using the handle …
The tail can be lifted and the airplane can be pushed, pulled and turned from this position.â€

Dave-

Interesting question.......................I've always issued strong warnings against pushing/pulling on the rear (and jury) struts, they are very easily damaged.

Tom-

They are pretty much correct still.
(Edit: Although quite conservative)

8KCAB front struts can be pushed on (with human flesh, not some tool/machine....i.e. HANDS) safely. You would have a real hard time damaging the aluminum front struts with your hands.

Places we push (always with our hands)
1) Propeller base, near the hub.
2) Leading edge of Vert Stab (Careful here to just push with your palm on the steel. Its not a handle) and the Leadign edge of the Horizonal stab...again, dont be pushing on the fabric, just the steel. Palm works best.
3) Front Struts (New AC all have the big front strut, not just 8KCAB)
Dont use the rear struts. They are steel, but they are thin wall.
4) Top of the Vert Stab Flying Wires, using the fleshy part between thumb and fore-finger. Basically, this is just right at the attachment so you dont bend the flying wires. It takes quite a bit of finese, so I have never been a fan of this.

Thanks Jerry, just as we were doing anyway.
We were discussing this with some new pilots on this rainy Sunday afternoon. One of my rules is not to stand on the strut when checking the fuel contents. Some-one pointed out that one of the local Decathlons has a step on the strut, like the Cessnas. Is that a factory option?
