Different Engine Noise

I recently stayed on the ground whilst my son flew my Citabria doing circuits. I must admit I was rather surprised at the sound of the motor from the ground when he was overhead. The only conclusion that I can draw as to why a 150HP Lycoming IO320 would sound so different to say a Super Cub, is the fact that the exhausts are split 4 into 2. Anybody else out there had any experience of possibly using a 4 into 1 and whether they too have noted the different sounds from the ground of a Citabria.

All aeroplanes sound different, my friend has a S*per C*b and it sounds like a bag of spanners compared to my 7GCBC - everyone comments as to how quiet mine sounds, unless I am giving it grief at 2900rpm overhead - then they say it is loud !

Be proud that he flies, check you insurance deductable :shock:
