i am steve thompson ,bought a 65 7eca project w/o-200, need help with installing more horsepower, what stc's are available, this is my first time here so am unsure where or what to look for, thanks for any help. steve thompson

I curently own a 7ECA with the O-200 and have had an interest in engine upgrades as well. Currently there are no STC's available to allow you to upgrade the engine. The FAA in the past has granted one time STC approval to certain individuals for s/n specific aircraft. The club has a publication outlining two seperate cases where approval was given for O-320 upgrade. In addition, if you were to search the FAA web site for STC's available for TC A-759, you would find that they issued a STC to Paul Chase in MI to install O-320 in the 7ECA. This STC is not available for purchase.

However, in the TC A-749 there are several models of the O-235 that can be installed in the 7ECA. It is my understanding that this could be done with just a log book entry.

The tech reps at American Champion Aircraft have told me that they have assisted individuals in the past with info regarding what was required to install the O-320 in the 7ECA. I am not sure how receptive the FAA is today to granting one time STC (field?) approvals.

If I own my plane long enough, I am sure I will be looking into it closer.

thanks tony i am looking at a possible 0-290 upgrade have one located hate to go experimental but wiil if i have to. i know of a 46-7ac with a 160hp 0320 looks like a citabria dont think i am talented enough to do what he did,its a masterpiece.let me know if you come up with any news on this . thanks steve thompson

tony; I also have a 65 7eca with 0200 and am desperate for more power and I don't think that the o235 will fill the bill. It is a great airplane and I don' t want to trade in order to get more power. I wonder if several of us band to gather and apply for a one time stc specific to only the several planes that are applying. We would only have to hire one A&P with IA to do the paper work and submit it for us. Any regular A&P from various locations could do the work and verify that the work was done according to A&P with IA. If any one has futher sugestions I would like to hear. Jim Raleigh

Jim,

I am starting to look into the O-320 upgrade for my 7ECA. I have spoken to the FAA folks locally and they feel that getting field approval is a doable (is this a word?) thing. Next step is to start the ball rolling with the ACO.

Here is what I know today. The O-235-C1 (115 HP) could go in with log book entry's only. The landing gear struts would require the "high energy taxi springs" to be installed, as well as the rest of the items related to the Lycoming engine installation (per Champion drawings).

I was in the process of looking at an O-235-K2C (118 HP) that had been removed from a 79 7ECA. A couple of stumbling blocks that I ran into was 1 - in the type certificate the K2C is approved with the spring type landing gear only, 2 - the cowling approved with the K2C installation would not fit our aircraft due to the boot cowl used with the oleo type gear. So it would appear that to use this engine there is no basis for justification and would probably require an engineering study to get past the cowling, landing gear, baffeling, exhaust issues. Lots of $$$$$.

On a more positive note. The folks at Safe Air Repair have the proper cowlings that are needed for the Lycoming installation in our vintage aircraft. The same cowlings are required for the 115 HP 7ECA, as well as the 150 HP 7GCAA. I am currently looking at upgrading to 7GCAA configuration in our vintage using Champion drawings as justification for one time STC/Field approval.

I will keep the board posted.

This conversion has been made many times; the Club has a book containing a list of parts differences and sample 337's.
