Jim,
I am starting to look into the O-320 upgrade for my 7ECA. I have spoken to the FAA folks locally and they feel that getting field approval is a doable (is this a word?) thing. Next step is to start the ball rolling with the ACO.
Here is what I know today. The O-235-C1 (115 HP) could go in with log book entry's only. The landing gear struts would require the "high energy taxi springs" to be installed, as well as the rest of the items related to the Lycoming engine installation (per Champion drawings).
I was in the process of looking at an O-235-K2C (118 HP) that had been removed from a 79 7ECA. A couple of stumbling blocks that I ran into was 1 - in the type certificate the K2C is approved with the spring type landing gear only, 2 - the cowling approved with the K2C installation would not fit our aircraft due to the boot cowl used with the oleo type gear. So it would appear that to use this engine there is no basis for justification and would probably require an engineering study to get past the cowling, landing gear, baffeling, exhaust issues. Lots of $$$$$.
On a more positive note. The folks at Safe Air Repair have the proper cowlings that are needed for the Lycoming installation in our vintage aircraft. The same cowlings are required for the 115 HP 7ECA, as well as the 150 HP 7GCAA. I am currently looking at upgrading to 7GCAA configuration in our vintage using Champion drawings as justification for one time STC/Field approval.
I will keep the board posted.
