Mars needs wing bolts!

NC74392

New member
Anyone have a source for new wing attach bolts and nuts? I don't know how the other owners of NC74392 (14-13-2) got away with it, but there are NO THREADS on two of the wing bolts! How they managed to do this is beyond me. I don't even have a guess :!:

Anyway all help is appreciated :D

hey dave!

no threads, eh? who says aviation is dangerous? it'd been flying like that for how long and had no problems?

one source of your wing bolts might be the factory. i see on their web site they advertise parts and hardware. give 'em a call.

if they do not, look up the bolt/nut/washer required (probably AN-something-or-other) and call Genuine Aircraft Hardware at:

http://www.gen-aircraft-hardware.com/

they have just about everything. a little more spendy than a/c spruce, but it's all approved/traceable stuff and that will give your IA a warm fuzzy feeling. :D

hope this helps!

I'll give them a try.
Boy- I'll bet my neighbors will be surprised when I assemble the Bellanca in the front yard to rig the controls! Hee hee :D

You might as well wait till you get to the airport to rigg the controls. You will have to undo it all to move it anyway.

The bolts you are looking for are somethging like an AN35-?. I found mine in Dallas at a supply house. I will try to find the name. A friend new the owner and I got them for around $15. a piece. They retail about $30. a piece out here.

Interestingly enough, the bolts are not shown in the (B20-201) Parts Manual, but are illustrated on Page 2 of the (B20-211) Operator's and Service Manual, as follows:
Forward Attach: AN9-41 Bolt, AN310-9 Nut, AN380-4-4 Cotter
Aft Wing Attach: AN9-51 Bolt, same, same

Although the AN9 series is available, I have not had any success in finding them in these sizes. If you do, please feed it back to the Club.

Word to the wise: Be sure to know the source and legitimacy of these bolts; they are the only things between you and eternity.

Regards,

all,

robert, thanks for the part numbers. i looked them up at genuine aircraft hardware and found that they have the AN9-41A in stock for $18 each  , but not the -51.

dave, might be worth a call to GAH to see if they can get the -51 for you. $18 a piece seems a bit spendy, but otoh how often will you have to buy these? and have you priced a new butt lately?

hope this helps!

Apparently the AN9-51 hasn't been made since 1995, or at least have not been "shopped" by suppliers since 1995. :(

I have a local Aerospace manufacturer that says they can make these for me (SEI Co.). I know I can supervise and still call these self-made parts, but just how reliable will these things be? Should I have them magnafluxed after they're made :?:

Don't know what to do really- one of the aft wing bolts is garbage. A second one has buggered threads.

Got the short front bolts (AN9-41) from Genuine Aircraft Hardware. My AI says he will allow me to use AN9-52s for th rear ones with washers to shim them to the right length. :? Not quite what I wanted, but beggars can't be choosers.
He also wants me to use lock nuts instead of castle nuts with cotter pins. OK by me I guess.

Not cheap no matter how you go about it.

DD

The factory will have them, But will cost almost $500.00 for the complete set. Make sure you have them magnafluxed if you buy them elsewhere. Good luck

I bought a 9/16-18 tap and die (didn't really need the tap) from McMaster-Carr and chased the threads on all my original bolts. AI says he will do a dye-pen on them to check 'em out. I was thinking magnaflux myself, but if dye-pen check is adequate, I'll go that route. :D :D
If anyone else out there needs to borrow my tap and dye, let me know. They weren't cheap

It's nice to have the new bolts with the paper trail. Even with this do you feel it's necessary to have them checked? They're not the "Jesus nut" on a helicopter, but I guess these must be the "apostle bolts" on a Bellanca at the very least.
