Nutcracker Bolts

I took the lead from Russell Williams and installed NAS Bolts in the nutcrackers. I am also amazed at how much play was in the gear, a significant amount attributable to the threads of the bolts riding in the bushings.

The factory used standard AN bolts, however, the grip length of the AN bolts are too short, the treads ride in the bushings. The NAS Bolts have the proper length of grip and the threads do not ride in the bushings, costs more, but much, much, better. Machining of the bolt does need to be accomplished to accommodate the zerk fitting, and grease exit hole, but is well worth the effort.

Short Bolt grips in 1/16”, 3/8” Bolts, drilled shank, NAS464-6-19, NAS1106-19D, NAS1306-19D, NAS6206-19D, NAS6606-19D, Grip length 1.1875

Long Bolt grips in 1/16”, 7/16” bolts, drilled shank, NAS464-7-36, NAS1107-36D, NAS1307-36D, NAS6207-36D, NAS6607-36D, Grip Length 2.25

I do have an extra set made up, one for each gear, if someone is interested, give me a call.

Well Gary, good question. What aircraft model do you have?

N6RJ is a 14-19, but does have the 14-19-2 gear, not quite sure about a standard 14-19. The -19 bolt is a 3/8 inch bolt that is 1 3/16" on the grip length. The -36 7/16" bolt has a grip lenth of 2.25", I believe that this is the size for the all of the 14-19-2 as well as other later models. Each gear leg has 2 of the 7/16" bolts and 1 of the 3/8 inch bolts. Take a measurement on the outside of the ears on the gear leg, and measure the outside of the nutcracker at the joint between the two links (3/8" bolt). Chime in if anyone knows if the models up to the Viking has the same.
