That looks pretty interesting, but I am curious about the Trimotor on the cover. A month ago I got about 10 minutes stick time in a Ford Trimotor and I have seen (many years ago) A Stinson and Folker Trimotors, but I dont recognize the plane on the cover of that magazine. Anybody know? Just curious. ____Grant.

These are great old magazines. good for reference and history. I have quite a few.The opening bid is about the max that I'll pay for one that I want.
The aircraft on the cover is a Stinson model "A." It was powered by three Lycoming R-680s. American Airlines
and others operated these in the mid-30s.
I think Greg Herrick in Mn. has the only flying survivor.

Thanks Dan That is probably the Stinson Trimotor that I saw decades ago. I just didnt remember it as being a low wing. It certainly looks more modern than the Ford Trimotor. I wonder why it wasnt a success? ____Grant.

Grant,
Stinson made high wing trimotors as well.
The DC-2/DC-3 instantly made these and other airplanes obsolete, overnight.

Another learning moment! I knew Stinson made a Trimotor, but I had no idea they made both high and low wing. My memory of seeing the Ford, Folker and Stinson fly over me is a couple of decades old. I thought I remembered it as a high wing, but that was a lot of years ago. Dan, on a different note, there is an unknown 5 cylinder radial for sale on the Dallas Craigslist. I have no idea what the radials used on early Bellancas look like, but I thought you might be interested in looking at it. It could possibly be parts for you. ____Grant.

I just looked again and it is gone. Somebody probably snatched it up. It was a 5 cylinder radial and the only thing different from other radials that I have seen was that the front of the case was a rather large bolted on plate. It was listed at $950. If I see anything else that might possibly be early Bellanca related, I will email you directly. What were the radials used on the early Bellancas. Maybe I can google them and see if I recognize anything. ____Grant.

The 14-9 series used the Rearwin Ken Royce 5F/G engine, which was a derivative of the Leblond engine line.
There were three 14-9L built using the Lenape LM5 engine. These engines can be identified from a distance as the KR had pushrod housings to the rear of the cylinders, like most Wright engines. The Lenape had their pushrod housings out in front of the cylinders, like most Pratt & Whitney engines.
What you might have seen for sale is a Lawrence GPU engine....five cylinder and 37 HP.

I just went looking for photos of Kinner, Lablond and Kenroyce and I think it might have been a Lablond or Kenroyce. I need to learn how to capture photos from the internet. At this point I really cant be sure of what it was. Oh Well, another unsolved mystery. ____Grant.
