Replacement Tires - 8KCAB

Looking for recommendations on replacement tires for my 1992 8KCAB. The existing Air Hawk 6.00-6's are getting well worn and I'm curious if it's worth paying for a higher grade tire, e.g. the Goodyear Flight Custom III, Michelin Aviator or if that's overkill. I saw a cutaway of the Flight Custom III at Oskosh last month and it looked pretty heavy-duty with the Kevlar layer but also pricey.

Also curious what # of ply's folks use typically, 4 or 6. I do a fair number of touch & go's on paved runways so I'm looking for a durable tire that has a longer lifespan.

Have had the plane for a couple of years but just getting around to joining this club, appreciate any info, Thanks!

Flight Custom IIIs would be over kill. You are paying for a speed rating that you don't need. Aviation Consumer performed a tire test and rated the Goodyears the best if memory serves me correctly. However in my opinion, tail draggers typically have such uneven wear on the mains that it negates the advantages of a premium tire.

I go with a less expensive tire but still use premium tubes. Michelin Airstop are my preferred tubes.

Extra plys(6) increase the load capacity but don't increase longevity.

I do quite a bit of tail Wheel instruction in an 8KCAB. I have had a good experience with the 600x6 6 ply retread sold on Spruce for about $78.95. As Bill said in his post-no matter what you put on they will wear unevenly so I flip the tires...on the same side when the wear gets noticeable. I also use Michelin air stops. I usually go through 3-4 Tailwheel tires a year as I instruct on grass and grooved asphalt.

I have used Desser Tire Monster Retreads the last 2 tire changes and have found them to be very long wearing and satisfactory.
