Rudder spings

Good Morning,
Received a report my right rudder spring broke off upon friend’s landing.
Can we put new spring on without A&P?
Also, I have owned two Citabrias and never had this happen. Could it be a defective spring or?
Appreciate your time in helping me.
Thank you

It is not listed in CFR 43 appendix A section (c), so technically you need an A&P. It is actually part of rigging the rudder cable tention.

Thank you for the response. I think you are correct. I was hoping I could slip it In somewhere under CFR 43, but it won’t fit.
Thanks again.

Which spring broke? Are you referring to the spring between the tail wheel and rudder horn or the one at the rudder pedal?

Bill

Good question Bill, I was assuming the rudder cable spring.
If it was the tail wheel spring, I think the owner could change it.

I agree. Replacement of bungee or elastic shock absorbers on landing gear is permissible under owner maintenance. This maybe a stretch in interpretation as the function is not the same, but a reasonable argument could be made supporting owner sign off.
