Slow Cranking During Start-up

Just wondering if everyone's Citab is slow to crank on the first flight of the day. I have a '69 7GCBC. I though it was time for a new battery but even with the new one it's still less than enthusiastic. I have nice clean cables, with fine wire to carry the juice. A buddy has a similar vintage Citab and complains of the same thing. I can't help but wonder if it's the nature of the beast since the battery is located so far away in the back. I also wonder if one of the new, permenant magnet starters can be used with a STC, and if they would crank better.

I put a Sky-Tec an my 7AC pwered with an 0-235 and it spins over much faster than the factory starter.

Had exactly this propblem on my '79 GCBC. All cables checked, new battery fitted - noticed that the old battery showed some signs of high current draw on the terminal - discolouration and was warm after a couple of start attempts.

Then it wouldn't start at all - off came the boat anchor of a starter and I thought I was into cost to replace.

Being curious I stripped the starter to see what it was like - 2 screws that hold the cover between the motor and the gear section had backed out and gone walkabout down the motor ! One was welded to the side, the other had almost vapourised !

A careful inspection, clean, reassemble with new star washers on the new screws, I thought I would try it - bingo - spins like a good one.

If it hadn't worked I would have swapped it for a new permanent magnet lighter one.

Thanks, I'll pull it and have it checked like you say since that's certainly the cheapest place to start.
