STC for Dynafocal installation

Have a 7ECA 1968 Citabria. Have an engine 0320E2A/dynafocal engine case and looking for STC mount for this installation.

To the best of my knowledge one does not exist. I have a 69 ECA in restoration and a O320E2D that I would like to install. I have researched the topic and found that I would need to plan for a field approval once I had the engine mount made. I was in discussions with Kosola Inc to build the mount but they are too busy. Do you have supplier for the mount?

I spoke with my local FAA and had their cooperation for the field approval due to the fact that the airplane was designed for that horsepower.

Hi, have you guys made any progress on this one? I'm looking at buying a 1965 7ECA project that originally had an O-200 installed. I flew this particular plane before the current owners began the rebuild and while we were flying two up and in the lee of a range of hills I seem to remember being out of sight of the field before we made our 500ft turn! I gave up trying to climb at that point and just turned downwind and once back on the ground figured that was the safest place to be.

Do you have any idea if the cowls for the O-200 7ECA and the O-235 7ECA are the same? I'd imagine the O-235 cowls could be used with the O-320. There is a 7ECA here in New Zealand with an O-320-B2B (160hp) installed. It belongs to a gliding club and I've spoken with one of the pilots and he says it goes quite well.

If you can share any further thoughts on your projects I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Andrew.

The cowl for the 0200 is different than the Lycoming powered Citabrias. The pre 1974 cowl for the Lycoming is interchangable and the 1975 and later are also. The 1974 is unique.

Hey thanks Paul. I may well come to the conclusion that this plane is best left with an O-200. To convert to O-320 will just cost too much. Even the current owners don't have much good to say about the performance with the O-200. With this in mind my interest is waning!

Andrew,
I have, for the near future, given up on dynafocal mount. There is a gentleman in Canada that built his own mount for the O320 however the aircraft is licenced in Canada's version of experimental. As a Hatz builder I have nothing against experimental other than the decreased resale value that would result to the ECA.

If you have any additional information or would like the contact please let me know.

Regards,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I’ve agonised over this project for hours. There are only five Citabrias in New Zealand and two Champs. The opportunities to own one in this country are far and few between. I have been unable to get much information via the internet about people that have converted a 7ECA to O-320. I haven’t bought this aeroplane yet so don’t even have the parts book to work out exactly what is involved. All I have been able to conclude is it would be very expensive and from that I would have further concluded it is simply uneconomic and the project is best left to someone who is happy with the O-200 performance.

With regard to what you wish to do I really think it would be more economic to trade your O-320-E2D for an O-320-A2B. Ha, ha, when such things weren’t so frowned upon in our country we even welded up an –E2D case and remachined it with the conical mounts. The CAA approved engine shop re-stamped the plate and that engine was installed in a Super Cub and I flew many hours behind it. Don’t forget the carburettor is in a different place between the dynafocal mount engines and the conical mount engines, so nothing that is original Champion/Bellanca/ACA will fit. Again the peripheral issues are also going to swallow up the dollars; cowls, baffles, exhaust etc.

I’m happy to discuss further or continue off line.

Cheers,
Andrew.
