Use bicycle grips, find a style you like-you will have to cut one end if it's closed, since the stick is slightly larger diameter then a handlebar you need one that's flexible.
Install it using waterless hand cleaner (no pumice or grit), liberally coat the stick AND the entire surface of the inside of the grip. It must be positioned correctly, then slid it into place, the lube will need overnight to dry and form a tight fit.
