Vacuum system troubles.

Gentlemen,

I have a 1973 7GCBC. The plane is all original. That being said, I've noticed lately that my Artificial Horizon and Directional Gyro are not operating properly. The Artifical horizon takes a long time to level itself, and the center of the instrument has a constant vibration up and down while in flight. The Dirctional Gyro precesses badly, and some times the adjustment knob does not seem to work, but other times it does.

I know nothing about the vacuum system in this plane. I believe both instruments are vacuum driven. Do I need a complete system overhaul, or is there anything I should look at first? I was going to have both instruments replaced until I saw the price of new ones. Does anyone know of a good overhaul shop that can recondition mine? Also, is there a way to tell if the vacuum system is working properly? I don't want to have the instruments overhauled if the problem turns out to be someplace else.

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to save some money, as things are tight right now.

Hi,

For the overhaul option I highly recommend Keystone Instruments in Lock Haven, PA http://keystoneinstruments.com/

I have a '79 7ECA with the original instruments. I had the Airspeed Indicator and turn coordinator rebuilt by Keystone---they look and work like new. My turn coordinator is electric. The cost in May '08 was 225.00 + 40.00 for parts for the T/C and 159.00 for the ASI.

My attitude indicator is slow to erect in cold weather, that will be the next one for rebuild.

Good luck!

Bill

FYI-

If you have the original instruments installed they probably need overhaul however the first thing to check is the vacum system. Confirm that the lines are intact and attached, the filter clean, and either the vacum pump or venturi works.
