Today I was out messing with tire pressures in my ABW 31'ers and after 30 minutes. I got ready for another take off, Got on brakes, and ran RPM's up to 2500 and the pushed the stick forward to get 2550 and bring the tail up, I then went to neutral stick and let off the brakes, started to roll out and lost rpm down to 1200. Luckily I was not on my 280 foot bear hunting strip with a creek on both sides, but a 6000 foot airport. So, I then got it into taxi mode back to the hanger. Got to hanger and was checking mags and all the normal problems, and then with the cowling already off, I look into the carb heat box and the is a piece of triangle metal about 6 inches long and 2.5 inches on the big side. After further inspection it was part of my air intake box, that they formed fiberglass around. So, please inspect the inside of your airbox for a loose piece. At low rpm it layed on the bottom, but the when airflow increased into the carb, the big piece would close off and starve it of O2. Got lucky I was on a runway, and that the piece was big enough not to do any other damage. I have a picture if anyone is more interested. My IA told me cubs use to have a similar problem with one of their intakes. About $20 of materials, and repair is half the way complete. Will finsih up morow and take some friends bear hunting this weekend. Tomorrow is my birthday, so I guess I got my present early.
