Citabria Battery charging problem

Jerrymjr:

Unfortunately, Jerry, my experience with solid state components and older technology does not follow your statements. My experience has been that the older stuff is much more rugged and reliable than the new, solid state, items. You may have to tolerate the amp meter needle jumping around and some alternator whine in the headset, but the system lasted a long time and was hard to kill.

This seems to be especially true if a solid state item is placed into an older system in the "after market" sense. In general there seems to have been a lack of adaquate testing. The solid state items work great in the situations where they were designed and bench tested to handle. Put them into the real world, and Murphy will always throw in a surprise such as "brush hop". Unfortunately for us guys with older planes, beta testing of aftermarket "improvements" often seems to get done as we try them out in the field.

The original alternator in our 7KCAB had been in our plane for over 30 years without a problem. As soon as we put in the solid state voltage controller and integrated overvoltage protection and guess what....problems from unexpected sources.
