Piston cleaning???

I use glass...and I explained how I clean up so there is no contamination.
Simple, easy, cost effective, time effective, and doable in California.

Carbon Removal

Recently I have been looking at videos on YouTube of guys cleaning out the extreme carbon build up
in VW TDI Diesel intake manifolds ( due to exhaust gas recirculation scheme).

The classic DYI method is to set it on fire with a propane torch, and keep it burning with compressed air.

Messy, dirty, and hot.

The alternative method is to use bubbling oven cleaner... which strangely enough works.
I assume this is a caustic product.. which maybe is contra-indicated on aluminum.. but seems not to hurt the
the heavy castings of manifolds not a bit.

I would measure a junk piston.. maybe one that had been bead blasted, use the oven crap on it..
then measure and visually inspect.. and see if the stuff does any damage to surface or dimensions.

Machine shops used to have caustic dip tanks...haven't been in one of those in 40 years.

Elsewhere on Youtube.. Mr Wizard shows you why you DONT use oven cleaner on aluminum... http://youtu.be/20nMtKL5U7k

You may want to try this stuff if oven cleaner floats your boat. It is not real expensive. Might be worth a try. Claims won't harm metals, though the pH is up there with oven cleaner. Give us a report.
